Week Two Top 25

This week’s AP Top 25 was released today, and there are some surprises. First, the number one team, Ohio State, is still king of the hill. Perhaps because of the excitement of this Saturday, Texas is now ranked #2. For those that don’t know, Ohio State is visiting Texas on Saturday night. It’s going to be a huge game of epic proportions.

Let me just get it right out in the open. I just don’t understand why California is still in the top 25. First, they didn’t deserve to be ranked #9 last week. Second, they got hammered by then #23 Tennessee 35-18. California looked terrible. Want something else to gripe about? Eight, yes eight, number one votes for California came in. Perhaps actually watching college football should be a prerequisite for voting.

Notre Dame dropped to a tie for fourth. They were extremely lackluster in their 14-10 survival of Georgia Tech. Why are they 4th, but Florida State, who beat a ranked team, is ranked 9th? Tennessee is 11th, and they also beat then #9 California. It just shows you that the AP ranking is more about media coverage and hype and less about actual play.

USC moved up to third. They were 6th, and perhaps they belonged there. I’m not saying USC didn’t look great, but a jump from 6th to 3rd should only happen when you beat a ranked team, and the teams above you faltered. However, I think USC is poised to destroy #21 Nebraska next week so this move might be a week ahead of its time.
