In the media recently, the question is being asked: how it is that the wealthy are doing so well while the middle class is suffering in comparison? The usual villains named are outsourcing and the resulting decline of the manufacturing base. Blame also goes to NAFTA and the other trade agreements negotiated by the last three administrations.

But there is another and more fundamental reason why we have this dramatic disparity in income. If you remember Economics 101 in college and the topic about the relationship between commodities and money, you may have seen, as I did, this little formulation written on the blackboard: C-M-C vs. M-C-M. The lecture had to do with a healthy system vs. an unhealthy one. I even recall the professor using the terms ethical and unethical in this context.

In a C-M-C economy, money functions as it was intended as the medium of exchange between commodities, all kinds of raw materials, produce, manufactured goods and services. In this natural system, some of the money made and earned passes into the hands of workers and that money works its way around and through the economy, benefitting many people. In effect wages multiply in value.

In an M-C-M economy, on the other hand, money is perverted into a commodity and real commodities serve only as an artificial and unnatural medium of exchange. In other words, people use money to make more money. In these cases money does not work into the general economy for the general welfare but remains in the hands of the few, sometimes not even involving a commodity except in name only. Combine that arrangement with beneficial tax and loophole policies and the effect is multiplied and protected.

One caveat: some may recognize the M-C-M system as an expression for arbitrage, the business of buying and selling of money, usually with no commodities involved. Sometimes, arbitrage serves a useful purpose in keeping the prices of commodities in balance with different currencies, but in general those in arbitrage have little or no contact with real commodities. But there is still a danger as we have seen in arbitrage manipulation of markets.

The point here is to suggest that using money to make money with little relationship to commodity is an unhealthy practice because it bypasses the makers of products, most of whom are the Middle Class. The result is that workers are left out of the loop and there are no wages to work their magic in the economy as a whole.

Another answer given to the disparity between the rich and the middle class is the failure of so-called trickle down economics. But here again is a misunderstanding. In an M-C-M economy, there is nothing to trickle down because commodity is either not involved or only marginally involved. And if the wealthy choose not to invest in the creation of commodity, the flow of money dries up.

As my professor explained to us in that Econ 101 class, he acquired knowledge and experience to sell to an institution which paid him a salary so that he could offer courses that students were willing to buy in order to acquire knowledge and experience. It was C-M-C working in good order. It worked for me for forty years in education and can work again.

This period also saw Japan change from being a feudal world to having a retail monety złote Kraków control and left the Japanese with a gradual Western influence.

Banks pile into ECB’s new super-long-term liquidity facility

The first-ever 3-year liquidity operation by the ECB was an unqualified success. Banks bid for a greater-than-expected €489.2bn, making this the largest-ever single refinancing operation in the ECB’s history.

However, this is not the net amount by which outstanding ECB open market operations have increased. Because banks reduced their use of the Main Refinancing Operation (MRO) by €123bn yesterday, and also the use of 3-month long-term refinancing operations (LTROs) by €111bn allotted today, the net increase is smaller.

Moreover, several banks made use of the possibility to swap out of the recent 12m LTRO that was allotted in October into the new 32-month facility (123 out of 181), to the tune of €46bn.

So the net increase in outstanding open market operations is about €210bn, which is a considerable amount compared with the €514bn in total MOs that were outstanding at the beginning of the week. But arguably more important than the raw amount by which liquidity has increased is that the maturity of those funds has lengthened drastically, which will give banks more planning certainty and will hopefully support lending to households and enterprises as well as creating additional demand for bonds issued by the hard-pressed southern European member states.

Another sign of the success of the auction was the large number of banks that participated. 523 banks entered bids, which compares with 130-200 at the weekly MROs, and 181 at the most recent 12-month LTRO. So, clearly there is no sign of stigma here. Another 32-month LTRO is planned for 29 February.

Since the downturn in 2008, many Americans have been forced to rethink their careers. Some have gone back to school to freshen up their skills, or learn new ones, and a lot of that training is taking place online. Elearners.com is a site that connects prospective students with online college courses and certification programs.

So what do Americans want to be certified in?

Wedding planning and gunsmithing.

With the companies current shift towards inspired design, Kia motors will produce the GT concept which was first shown at the Frankfurt auto show in 2011. The GT’s slick design is clearly aimed at competing with European luxury brands such as Audi.

Kia is saying that the introduction of the GT will not be a one off model but will be followed possibly by a two-door coupe and even a station wagon thus adding a new family of vehicles to the already growing brands ranks. The GT shown at the Frankfurt show was presented with a 390 horsepower turbocharged V6 which seems like part of the ploy to convert a few Audi and BMW owners over to the Korean brand. Kia wants to present the GT as a cheaper alternative to those interested in buying a luxury car at a cheaper than luxury price.

Peter Schreyer, Chief designer for Kia has even hinted that he would like to design a budget sports car for the brand that would compete with the Mazda MX-5. Although the general direction of the company as of late would suggest that this could be a reality, there is nothing concrete to say that it is.

[Source: InsideLine]

In what Kia claims is a worldwide first for an EV manufacturer, the Ray EV’s sharing of dimensions with the Ray CUV allows it to share a production line with conventional combustion engine vehicles. Although the front-wheel drive Ray EV is some 187 kg (412 lb) heavier than its gas-powered cousin, the Ray EV boasts faster acceleration (0 – 100 km/h/62 mph in 15.9 seconds) thanks to 77 percent greater torque (167 Nm). Kia says the vehicle has a top speed of 130 km/h (81 mph).

Kia says the Ray EV can be recharged in six hours from a 220 V household outlet or in just 25 minutes in fast-charge mode. The inlet for the 220 V supply is located under a flap in the front grille, while the fast-charge inlet can be found where the fuel intake is usually located on regular models. The 330 V lithium ion polymer battery pack is located under the rear seat and cabin floor.

The Ray EV has been fitted with a new type of regenerative braking system featuring an “Active Hydraulic Booster” that uses the electric motor to create hydraulic pressure for the brake system. Kia says in addition to harvesting excess braking energy to recharge the vehicle’s battery, it also provides consistent brake pedal force under a wide variety of driving conditions.

Like audio alert systems already available in a number of hybrid vehicles from manufacturers such as Toyota and Nissan, the Ray EV is fitted with a Virtual Engine Sound System (VESS) that emits a mixture of recorded gasoline engine noises when the car is traveling at speeds below 20 km/h (12 mph), or when reversing.

The instrument cluster displays electric motor operation, battery status and the distance before a recharge is required. An EV-specific navigation system features a 7-inch display that provides information such as the location of the nearest recharging stations – of which there are 500 in Korea with plans from the government to increase that number to 3,100 by the end of 2012. The navigation system also displays a circular shaped area over a map that shows how far the vehicle can travel with its current level of battery power.

The Ray EV won’t be available to ordinary customers with Kia currently planning to produce just 2,500 of the cars. These will be provided to government departments and public offices as part of the company’s research and development program to gather real-world usage and performance data to aid in the development of future electric vehicles.

The school-book expresses most of the themes that would light on KIA Forum dominate Trimmer’s later works, such as her moment on retaining social hierarchies
