UNLV Rebels Home Opener

UNLV RebelsThe UNLV Rebels have their home opener against Idaho State tomorrow at 7pm. There’s a lot of excitement in the air. The past two seasons for the Rebels have been anything but exciting. It’s hard to get excited when the team wins only two games all season long. The Rebels record for the past two seasons has been an identical 2-9 each time. While no one is expecting the UNLV Rebels to win the division, there’s optimism that this year’s team could reach .500 for the first time in awhile.

Idaho State is a Division II-A team that wants to see what they’re made of. So, tomorrow they are taking on the UNLV Rebels, who are a Division I-A team. The Rebels are expected to beat Idaho State, but it might not be the rollover that’s being predicted. I look for the Rebels and their spread offense behind new QB Rocky Hinds to be a little rusty at first. Expecting a blowout is a bit much. I am looking for the Rebels to post a modest win.

The Rebels defense, especially the secondary, should hold down the Idaho State offense. The corners are among the best out there. Eric Wright, a junior, is perhaps the most talented player on the team. His fellow CBs are John Guice, a senior, and Mil’Von James, a junior. Another talented player on the defense is Howie Fuimaono. He’s the senior defensive tackle.

Tomorrow’s game starts the Rocky Hinds era. He’s been highly touted this offseason. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because he is a transfer from USC. The Rebels are glad to have him, and they hope he can get into the swing of things quickly. Second-year coach Mike Sanford has overhauled the entire roster. He’s really brought a new atmosphere and attitude to Rebel football. The first year under Sanford was one to forget, but this season has a whole new feel. The team is full of many new players.
