UNLV Shines in Opener

UNLV RebelsThe UNLV Rebels took care of business on Saturday night by destroying the Idaho State Bengals 54-10. It was an all around great time at the ball game for Rebel fans. Rocky Hinds looked very solid in him debut. He’s only going to get better. The only “dead” quarter in this game was the 3rd. Both sides put up bagels. The game was tied after the first quarter—3-3—and fans were getting anxious for the Rebels to break out. They did in the 2nd quarter.

In the 2nd quarter, the Rebels put up 27 points on the board—4 touchdowns and a missed extra point. At the half this contest was in favor of the Rebels 30-3. In the fourth, the Rebels scored three more TD’s and a field goal. The last score came with just three minutes to go when Ryan Worthen blocked a punt from Ben Jakel and ran it in for a score. The ISU Bengals did manage to score a TD, but that was all they could muster.

Rocky Hinds threw for 322 yards and 1 TD. He also rushed for 42 yards and another TD. It was running back by committee for the Rebels. Erick Jackson had 79 yards and a TD, David Peeples had 10 yards and 2 TDs, and some other Rebel players helped combine for a total of 174 yards on the ground. The top receiver of the game was Ryan Wolfe. He had 160 yards receiving with 1 TD. He was also the recipient on a 71 yard play. The Rebels had 506 yards of total offense. The ISU Bengals managed to deal out 350 yards of offense, but they only had 10 points to show for it.

The UNLV Rebels home opener had almost 20,000 people in attendance. Next up for the Rebels is Iowa State.
